Smoking is injurious to health : Smoking is a serious health issue nowadays specially e in the young generation for countries like India. People are well known about the hazards of smoking in spite of that they prefer smoking risking their health. Smoking causes Cancer and this cancer may develop in any part of the body. Most of the starting smoker thinks that they will just try a puff of cigarette but unknowingly when this single puff turns into a habit mostly doesn’t gets it . Smoking does not risks the health of a smoker only but also neighboring non smokers .

 

Smoking boy or girl :

Whenever we concern about the smoking the first question which comes in our mind is why and how how are teenage boy or girl start smoking ? Here is the answer,there are many stimulus responsible for smoking some of which are briefed below.

  1. Peer pressure or influence:

It is the most common reason for a teenage boy or girl to start smoking. As many of the friends in the friend circle smokes they think that it will give and better personality,  dominant nature and attitude. In many cases some of the friends of an influence others to start smoking.

  1. Observing adults to smoke :

Whenever a growing kid observes adults specially their parent smoking, there isn’t a chance of starting smoking because they thinks it is a normal activity e and everyone does it in adulthood.

  1. Stress/depression :

Most of the adults and the teen used to smoke to get relief from stress because nicoten gives immense pleasure by activating certain areas of the brain creating hallucinations.

  1. Advertisement :

Nowadays there is a huge number of companies making so attractive advertisements aap on the television as well as the posters and that is with featuring actors sportsman’s etc. these advertisements influences young mind for a fresh start.

  1. Observation :

There are many big personalities often smokes it may be an actor officer businessman. Teens gets thinking that such facilities can smoke why don’t them ?

Smoking may harm every vital organ and its all aspects in our body some of which are –

  1. Heart :

Smoking damages heart severely it may cause coronary heart disease, heart attack, stroke, peripheral vascular disease and many cardiovascular diseases.

Actually the carbon monoxide and nicotine of the smoke stimulates heart to work faster which leads to heart failure other chemicals of smoke damages the coronary artery.

Fact- smoking doubles the risk of heart attack or coronary heart disease in comparison with and non smoker. But quitting smoking only for one year may reduce the risk to half and quitting for 15 years causes the previously smoking person similar to a normal non-smoker.

  1. Circulation :

The term from the smoke enters blood circulation directly which makes blood thicker which induces blood clotting.

This increases blood pressure due to thicker blood.

This thicker blood gets deposited into the artery making the artery narrow.these result list transport and availability of oxygen to the organ and brain.

  1. Lungs :

Mostly affecting organ of smoking is lungs. Starting from coughing wheezing and asthma to the fatal diseases such as pneumonia, emphysema and lung cancer.

Fact- smoking is responsible for 84% death from lung cancer and 83% death from obstructive pulmonary disease or COPD.

COPD – c o p d is a collection of lung diseases including chronic bronchitis and emphysema. Symptoms are difficulties in breathing due to the blockage in the respiratory pathway and damage in the lung tissue, persistent cough with phlegm, and frequent chest infection.

 

  1. Brain :

Smoking makes a person more vulnerable to have a stroke. Smoking increases the chances of developing a “Brain aneurysm”. It’s a bulb in the blood vessel wall  whitch mein rapture or burst. It leads to ” Subarachnoid haemorrhage”, which is a type of stroke and is fatal.

Fact- smoking increases the risk of having stroke by 50%. Quitting smoking for two years reduces the risk of stroke to half and quiting for 5 years makes a smoker similar to a non smoker.

  1. Mouth and throat :

The primary problem is smoking causes bad breath, stained teeth, gum disease, damaged taste sensation. The measured affects our increased risk of cancer in lips, tongue, throat, voice box, oesophagus.

Fact – 93% of oral cancer is caused by smoking. Quitting for 20 years reduces the risk of head and oral cancer as a normal person.

  1. Stomach :

Smoking is responsible for increased chances of stomach cancer and ulcer. It weakens the muscle that controls the lower end of the oesophagus and allows the acid of stomach to travel in wrong direction back to the oesophagus.

  1. Reproduction and fertility :

Smoking is responsible for male impotence as it damages the blood vessels to the penis. It also reduces the sperm count it and causes testicular cancer.

Smoking reduces fertility of a woman and risk of cervical cancer. also Smoking women are more susceptible to HPV infection which can develop into cancer.

another important problem of Smoking during pregnancy can lead to miscarriage, premature birth, steel birth etc.

There are 7000 different chemicals released from the cigarette smoke, out of which more than 70 are carcinogenics. The most studied chemical is ‘ Benzo pyrene’ or BP. BP is a ring shifted chemical called poly cyclic aromatic hydrocarbon produced when tobacco leaf is burned. It enters the body and is a powerful DNA disruptor producing mutations which lead to cancer.

Like most foreign chemicals taken in the body, BP is processed by the engine making it water soluble called ‘ Epioxide’. They forms bulky attachment to DNA which bends the DNA out of shape causing mutation.

Another broad class of tobacco carcinogen is ‘ Nitrosamines’. It is derived from nicotine we can bind to DNA and promote inaccurate DNA replication.

 

How to quit smoking :

Meaning of the smoker open tries to quit smoking but it is not easy practice because there is several withdrawal symptoms. Here are some of the ways which may help in quitting.

  1. Medication :

Three types of medications are available at most pharmacies – Nicotine gum, nicotine patches, nicotene lozenges .

4 types of prescribed medications are available – Nicotene inhalers, Nicotene nasal sprays, Zyban(bupropion) an antidepressant, Chantix – a drug which blocks the effect of nicotine in brain.

 

  1. Counseling :

Counselling may be with personal relatives such as friends, family members, colleagues. Home can hinder you from smoking.

Counselling may be with doctor, pharmacist, nurses are easily available now who can provide the proper guidance.

  1. Cold turkey :

It is a practice in which there is a decrease in the number of cigarette smoking per day gradually to nil. It helps in reducing nicotine withdrawal syndrome easily.

  1. E- cigarette:

It is a replacement of normal tobacco containing cigarettes it is helpful up to an extent but not a perfect solution.
